James „Jim“ Nachtwey is more than just a photographer. He is one of the most succesful and influential war photographers, documentary photographers and photojournalists of our times. His aim to create an antidote against war, famines and social injustice lead Nachtwey to various battlefields.
Armed with camera and bulletproof vest he documented the conflict in Northern Ireland, recorded fights and riots in South America, Eastern Europe, Afghanistan, photographed the genocide in Rwanda – always in the front row, always ready to shot, always true to the motto: „If your pictures are not good enough, you are not close enough.“Nachtwey’s pictures show the suffering of others in a way that catches you right away. Cruelty and pain are combined with dignity and beauty: a smooth and peaceful, yes an (almost) artificial, atmosphere captured in black-and-white. Yet professionally distanced and both incredible intensive and emotional. Nachtwey’s work is on the ridge between documentary and art, but definitely photography!
